Biography
Avril was originally born in Belleville in Ontario, Canda however her family soon moved to Napanee, the town often referenced in her songs. She began her music career when she won a competition to take part in Shania Twain's Ottawa concert in 1998.
Then at 16 she was signed by Ken Krongard for Arista Records. She went to New York to produce her first album, Let Go. However things didn't go well and it was not after two further years, a move to Los Angeles and switching to Nettwork that the album was finally released. It was worth the wait though proving to be a smash hit and spinning off numerous singles.
As well as topping the UK album charts and selling a total of sixteen million copies as of 2007 it won her Best New Artist at the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards, was nominated for eight Grammy awards and won four Juno awards.
In 2004 Avril returned with her second album, Under My Skin. It topped charts the world over including the United States, UK, Germany, Japan, Australia, Canda and amny others. It was certified platinum in eight different countries and produced another long list of singles most notable Don't Tell Me and My Happy Ending.
Avril took some time out for her personal life following Under My Skin and in 2006 married long term boyfriend and Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley. This was followed the year after by her third album, The Best Damn Thing which topped the albums charts in Canada, the UK, the United States and elsewhere as well as producing the singles Girlfriend and When You're Gone.
